Travelling on a double-decker bus, UK
I was travelling from the village of Thringstone into the city of Leicester to attend a game of rugby union. I decided to have a different view of the world than I was used to from my car so I sat on the top-deck of the bus. It felt like a more personal journey where I had brief glimpses into other people’s private lives. I was level with the upper storeys of most houses and could see down into people’s front rooms where they were ironing or watching TV. I could see into cars and wonder where people had been; a couple were driving back home with a pet carrier on the passenger’s lap and I thought about what had happened at the vet. A small truck had a pile of scrap metal in the back and a vast amount of material in the passenger seat and I wondered what would happen if the vehicle stopped suddenly.
On the way there an imposing building in Shepshed housing the Charnwood dental centre. Most of the stores on the way into the town were fast-food establishments. The bus crept around a housing estate and then headed into the centre of Loughborough along a route I thought I knew behind The Shires shopping centre. However, I saw a sign for a very short street called Aumberry Gap I’d never seen before. A little brat called William was soon being berated by his mum for acting badly and she threatened that if he didn’t behave he wouldn’t be going to the party tonight. This seemed to work as he was quiet for the rest of the journey. On the way back the bus followed a different route and I noticed that Custard House appeared to be the name of a pub on the same street as Mansion House and Revolution, both of which looked like night-clubs.
From the top-deck I could appreciate the town’s endowed schools had large playing fields with well-kept lawns. The Loughborough Endowed Schools is a charitable foundation of three independent schools operating under a single Board of Trustees/Directors. The Foundation comprises Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School and Fairfield Preparatory School. Fairfield prep school had at least four tennis courts and the manicured grounds were in sharp contrast to the litter-strewn rough area next door containing a skateboard park.
On the way into Quorn I could see over hedges into the farmer’s fields where vegetables were being grown. I could also see part of the National Forest, which increases in size each year. Robert Whowell and partners, chartered accountants, owned a four-storey building whose side was completely covered in a creeper. From my vantage point I could see a building in Quorn dated from 1744. I also received a close-up of the artistic endeavours that had created the pub sign for the Quorndon Fox. Other pubs in the village were called the White Hart and the White Horse.
In Mountsorrel the bus took a complicated route through the leafy
